Soccer requires a ball and thats it. American Football, requires a lot of gear and a stadium.... In all, soccer doesnt require any physical skills except being able to run and pass a ball, American Football requires built up players.
After All, Soccer is the best and the reason is you cant use your hand. Only ur feet, Think about it, all american sports allow hands... basketball, football, baseball....
Futbol is the best....

Every culture has its own games and rituals. Soccer is very similar to many games played by native peoples so it gets adapted very easily. Plus, like some one else said football is a more expensive game to play that limits its playing as a semi professional sport in developing nations. There is a different mentality to enjoying football than soccer. Like soccer to baseball. They are different sports. Anyone out there who mentioned rugby should re-read the question that wasn't asked. Besides when was the last time you saw a 6'7" 350 lbs man who ran a 4.4 40 yard dash hitting someone on a rugby field. rugby is filled with pro football wanna-be's. They may be tough but not that tough.
All in all football and soccer battle will never end. It is our equivalent of the chicken or the egg. So lets battle on. Football yes. Lawn fairys -no way!!!

In the US football is THE most popular. Soccer is, and never will be, more than a 3rd rate sport here in the US. American football is getting some international exposure with the NFL Europe. Whether it catches on or not doesn't really matter. We know we have the best game in the world.

The American got to stop having this mentality that everything else in the world is of no consequence or that the rest of the world could not possibly like anything different. America is part of the world NOT the other way round.
I agree to some extent with a comment above about the player "running for 30 seconds then nothing for 2 minutes". I mean, a player gets paid simply to come out and do ONE thing and that is to kick a ball? Try playing a full game of rugby and get tackled WITHOUT pads and helmets!

Soccer is a major sport because the influence Europe has had over Latin America, Africa, Middle east and Australia. Maybe in a few years they will be playing football in Iraq...

It is kind of an expensive sport to play, and people in poorer countries probably don't have the money to spend on the equipment. Go to any 3rd world country and you will see a bunch of kids kicking around a soccer ball just about everywhere you go.

Remember they used to be real impediments to travel.
Canadians play "American" football.
Latin America had a language barrier.
America did not have an empire the sun never set on to spread their culture. (What the US had it got from Spain in the early 1900s, except for Liberia which was basically an after thought.)
