The color of the star is dependent on the number of feedbacks you have to date. From their site:

Here's what the different stars mean:
Yellow Star () = 10 to 49 points
Blue Star () = 50 to 99 points
Turquoise Star () = 100 to 499 points
Purple Star () = 500 to 999 points
Red Star () = 1,000 to 4,999 points
Green Star () = 5,000 to 9,999 points
Yellow Shooting Star () = 10,000 to 24,999 points
Turquoise Shooting Star () = 25,000 to 49,999 points
Purple Shooting Star () = 50,000 to 99,999 points
Red Shooting Star () = 100,000 or higher

The stars let you know how much activity (feedback recieved) that the seller/buyer has done. I am a yellow star, which means I've gotten more than ten people to give me feedback on being a buyer or seller. I'm not sure what red or purple means but it pretty much means that the seller has gotten a lot of feedback (positive OR negative). Hope that helps!

The stars have to do with the person feedback rating. Everytime a person wins an auction or sell something they can leave feedback for the other user. When I buy something and the seller ships fast and the product is good I leave them a positive feedback. When I sell something I leave positive feedback for the other user if they pay in a decent amount of time.

The starts mean the quality of the seller....

Acquaring a start is related with the feedback rank and items sold. I just can tell you about the red one, this is when you get more than 1000 feedbacks keeping your rank in "positive", this is the start for "Power seller Me" and the start is like a award for your good job and it identifies you as a good seller... I dont have to much information about it, I'm just know about the red because I saw my brother jumping when he got his red start... but let me get more info and I'll be back...
