ya wanna know what would happen if ur neighbor happened to live in youngstown, ohio and u were doing that? u would have 1 of 2 things happen. 1: u would get a fix-it ticket and a fine that would increase on the next one, or 2: on the 3 instance the cops stopped u for an extremely loud exhaust, they would file a seizure requisition in court.
they do this quite often when it comes to 'boom cars'...u know the ones....cars that have stereo's loud enough to be heard 1/4 mile or more away easy. i also see from time to time in the reports in the paper of peeps getting cited for illegal exhaust in youngstown. for the past few months, youngstown has a zero tolerance policy.....the cops there will pull u over if u so much forget to signal a turn. and they're not the kind to play games either.

I've been riding for over 35 years both stock, and custom bikes. Lets be honest, you can be as considerate or as annoying as you want to be when you go by someones house.
I'm sure most if not all of you have EXTRA loud exhaust systems. It dosen't take much to keep things toned down until you get past the guys house. Certain sounds/frequencies affect people in different ways. The elderly can be almost deaf to some sounds and totaly annoyed by others.
Give the guy a break, invite to go for coffe or something. Be nice, that takes alot less effort. Then you can get out in the open and rev until you blow eachothers eardrums out.

Perhaps the best thing to do is try to be a little more quiet when going through the neighborhood. I love the sound of a loud H-D as much as anyone, but we still must exercise respect for other people, and their right to a peaceful existence.
Cut the old guy some slack, save the noise for the nonresidential areas.

To everyone who answered and immediately started bashing this guy for riding at 2 in the a. m. and having non-factory pipes, SHUT UP! If you would actually read the whole question before answering, you might be able to sound intelligent. He never said that he was riding by when most people are asleep, he just said he rides by a few times a week! He also said nothing about having custom pipes. The factory pipes on a Harley are usually loud pipes. Personally I like the sound of a Harley, but there are some riders out there that cross the line, just like a lot of young kids blaring there radios. As for your problem with your neighbor, try to talk it over with him. If that doesn't work then maybe just ignore him.

You know, like another person has responded to this, I think it was bikernoj tho i do not care....Why are you driving past the poor man's house at 2am? Isnt there another direction you can come from or, again, pull the clutch? Find another way to control the noise at night. Now, if you were talking about being during the day, then yea, I could see it happening to having a bit of fun and cause discontent. But at least respect the night.

Well, unfortunately, not everyone loves the sounds our motorcycles share. Riders using aftermarket exhausts, myself included, do risk annoying non-enthusiasts. You might consider taking a different route, or make an extra effort to ride as "quietly" as possible in that area.
My bike always seemed much louder starting and warming up in a quiet neighborhood. I have lived in areas that I had to "walk" my bike through before starting .. out of respect for elderly neighbors. Good luck with your neighbor and stay safe.

no not everyone likes all that noise,it doesn't matter if you are gone by in a few seconds if everybody for 1/2 a mile around can hear you.A nice sounding exhaust is OK but you have to admit that some of them are just ridiculous.I was on the highway the other day and got past by a loud bike and could still hear him on and of the throttle when he was about a mile ahead, that kind of sound is useless.maybe you need to have some one take your ride out and then you can hear how annoying it is.

I supose you would get upset if his dog barked every time you pulled into the street.I guess you have to tame your hog.I would go and make up. Tell him you are sorry about the noise and you will try to keep it down. My vulcan 1500 is quite loud and I just tone it down when I enter my street. I love my bike but I love our quiet street to. Show this guy that your not a rebel and just enjoy riding. good pr is always better than bad advertisement

Let off the throttle when rolling by the guys house. No sense in having the law at your door step.
As to the loud pipe saves lives response. Come ride in our congested area and tell me that principal doesn't apply. I agree it is pointless in an oncoming situation. However when soccer mom is on the phone or dude is jamming to his favorite tune do you think they know your along side of them? I sure don't. I don't care for obnoxious pipes myself as it gives me a headache after a few hours in the saddle but while in traffic they sure help.

I ride a Harley and like the louder rumble of the engine. But, there are some of my fellow riders whose bikes are way to loud. They ride down the street setting off car alarms. If you ride behind them on a trip it is very annoying. There is no consideration for others with excessive noise, especially the non-motorcyclists. Now many of these non-motorcyclist are trying to have laws passed to ban load pipes and certain communities have even posted off limit signs for motorcycles. ABATE is supporting the banning of excessive noise producing pipes because the number of riders are increasing and the noise is increasing. We need to consider others if we want to continue enjoying our freedom. Every year our city has bike week and when you have thousands of motorcycles coming in and driving all hours of the night setting off your alarms, it makes it difficult to sleep at night. I enjoy the roar of the motorcycle as you hear it come down the road but trying to be the loudest on the block does not make you the favorite neighbor in the neighborhood. One of my neighbors must either drink til 2am or work 2nd shift, He wakes everybody up when he comes home every night. Thank God for the winter months when he doesn't ride. My problem is my neighbors know I ride and don't look at me any different than they do the other guy. I ride with stock pipes and have not altered the sound at all, in fact there are those who tell me, "Your bike doesn't sound like a Harley." Stock pipes are not the loud pipes you are refering to, Harley sells load pipes because there is a demand for them and some guys will even remove the baffles out of these pipes as well to make them even louder. People associate us with the same ones who ride the bikes with loud pipes. Put the blame where blame is due. By the way, more and more crotch rocket riders are doing the same because they like the whining sound they make, this is just as annoying. I have even met a few OTH's (other than Harley owners) doing the same to their bikes and since the makers are styling them after the Harley style, if you didn't know any better you would assume they were Harleys. One on my fellow riders has a Boulevard with bored out pipes and when I first saw him on it, I thought he bought a new Harley. It's a trend that seem to affect all bikers, maybe to call attention to themselves or they are Harley Wanabe's? Here in PA it is no different than the teenagers with their Honda Civics with loud pipes racing down the streets or reving up their engines or squealing their wheels to impress their friends.
