What is the difference in elevation between the highest point in California, Mount Whitney, which towers 4421 meters above sea level, and the lowest point in California, Death Valley, which lies 86 meters below sea level.?

4421m+86m= 4507m

This is simple. One of them is above sea level and the other is below. Hence the 4421 is the measure from Mt Whitney to the Sea Level and the 86 is the measure from Sea Level to Death Valley. Just add them and u get the answer.

Note that if the lowest point is ABOVE sea level, u have to subtract, not add.

Since Death Valley is below sea level, you have to count its elevation as negative. So the difference in elevation is

4421 - (-86)

Ignore above answer: you must ADD them:

4421 - (-86) = 4421 + 86 = 4507
