My son is 6 months old. He has been spitting up since birth. He will arch his back and stiffen his body, doing this when I lay him down to nurse. He wakes up frequently through the night crying. He also occasionally cries AFTER eating and he has NO interest in eating any baby food or cereal. Its getting to the point that we're afraid to take him anywhere or let anyone babysit because we don't know how he will act. He does have good days, but the bad outnumber the good. His pediatrician doesn't think anything is wrong with him because he is gaining weight well. Has anyone had a similar experience? Any advice would be appreciated, as we are very frustrated.

The good news about infant acid reflux is it usually resolves on its own by the time the baby is 12-18 months old. One of the things you can do to help control reflux is change feeding positions. I'm slightly confused at "laying him down to nurse". If you sit in a chair with your back straight against the back of the chair and bring him up to your breast (versus lowering your breast down to him), he should be in a fairly upright position during nursing. If not, try placing a pillow under your arm so he can be as upright as possible. You can also try breaking the suction with your little finger inserted between your breast and his mouth during nursing so you can burp him more often. Gas bubbles can sometimes be the cause of pushing milk back up his esophagus. Some babies just drink too much too fast so be sure he is not getting too hungry between nursings. Offer him the breast before he begins crying too hard for it. If he is gaining weight and growing then he is doing fine. It is frustrating, but he will likely outgrow it soon. No need to worry about introducing solids. About 6 months is average for introducing solids, but some babies are ready at 4 months and some not until 9 months. Is he a cuddler and likes to be held at other times during nursing? If not, he may be crying and arching his back at nursing time because he doesn't like to be restrained. Try giving him lots of space even though your instinct is to hold him close. My son was like that, he never liked to be hugged and cuddled or kept too close for too long of a time. He is 25 now and still likes his personal space.

My baby gained weight normally also but he had reflux. Your son has very similar symptoms to my son. I started calling the Dr around 3 weeks old because of the throwing up and screaming. The "advice" nurse told me to stop breast feeding and try soy formula. That made it worse and it smelled horrible! I called back a few days later and she told me to change to gentlease and that I could give him breast milk again. He still threw up like crazy. Finally after calling for the fourth time and getting crappy advice, I insisted that I get a appointment. Im a nurse myself but a first time mom so I easily freak out about little things. I finally saw the Dr and he put my son on prilosec. It taste horrible but seemed to work for a while. My son is now 12 weeks old and the medicine has stopped working so Im going to try to get them to give him something else. Sometimes you have to MAKE them listen. Good luck!

My daughter had acid reflux. She could not keep anything down at all!!! The doctor put her on prevacid at about 3 months and it worked wonderfully!! It sounds like you need to make an appt. with another peditrician. The acid that comes up into the child's throat can cause damage!! It did to my daugher and it caused her to asperate(food to go into her lungs) her food, but just a little. It did repair itself once we got the acid reflux under control.
Good luck.
