It depends on the State that you reside in and her grades if she is able to get a hourly wage job where your reside. In the state where I reside, even McDonald's requires workers to be at least 15 and the local mall requires workers to be at least 16 (my son is 13 and wants to get a job when he turns 14 went around to local vendors and asked).

Only job I was able to get at 14 was as a food service worker in at a local nursing home and I had the choice of 2 3/4 on school nights during the week, or 8 hrs Sat. & Sun. on the weekends - I chose the latter for more hours. It involved making coffee, putting food on trays according the what was listed on the diet card (they always had an older, responsible adult as the "checker"), serving the patrons in the dining room, picking up the dining room, washing the dishes in a dishwasher and vacuuming the dining room after every meal.

Have heard other places that hire 14 year old is "Mom & Pop" owned restaurants...at first usually just to bus tables, run the dishwasher and roll up silverware in napkins. If they prove they are reliable, responsible and have good people skills, they can move up to waiting tables.

Good ways earn money for non-hourly wage (under the table, so to speak) would be a newpaper route (I think 7 is too young, but I had a child in my Jr. Achievement class that was only 7 years old and had a paper route), babysitting neighborhood kids, mowing lawns, raking leaves, shoveling snow, running a garage sale for a neighbor (for a percentage of profits..encourges them to be a sales person and talk the person into the price marked, not be haggled down..have also seen several amazing teen girls be able to "pick" out just the thing a person wants that they don't even know they want and be able to convince you and the people you are with "it is just the perfect thing for you!", whether it be a Batman figurine for my son after talking to him for 3 min, or me just looking for work or casual outfits).

In some neighborhood (find out from your local Code Enforcement first if ok and what colors the community uses) to use spray paint on the curbs to mark the street address to make it easier for 911 workers to find the home in the case of an emergency, do it for "free", but if they like the work, offer a donation or "tip".

Well at 14 (not all states allow 14 year olds to work) I think you should make her do chores around the house, babysit someone's children (she knows), and volunteer (at a church, charity, etc). And also check with your states' child labor laws. In VA 14 and 15 year olds can work but 14-year-olds can only work in the summer and anyone under 16 needs a worker's permit.

I hate to tell you but a rat would make a perfect pet for teenagers. And if you buy the rat in same sex pairs it doesnt matter if your teenager 'forgets' to spend time with them every day becuase they'll have each other. They are cheap, easy to house (smell less than mice, take up less room than rabbits or guinea pigs). Easy to transport. I got my first rat at 12 and i loved taking him places, he'd come on bike rides, to friends houses. He was extremely bonded to me and even crept out of his cage to snuggle in bed with me. While your studying, your rats can be running around your shoulders or over your desk They are also very easy to feed. They eat alot of human food so you dont have to spend lots of money on dog or cat food. but just check what foods they cant eat first as some can make them sick. You may also find in a few years a dog or cat doesnt suit your lifestyle, especially if you go away to college or where you live at that stage - and they have a much longer lifespan where as a rat is 2-3 years

Why do kids want to work at such a young age.
I started working at 15, i feel like i missed out on alot of things in high school-playing sports and stuff because i was working instead. Get out of school-you have to go to work. During Christmas or Spring break you have to work-thus your parents/family cant go on vacation with you. It really isnt worth the little money that a kid makes.
She has her whole life to work ahead of her-tell her to enjoy her youth for now.
Just my two cents.
