Because in Latin (and its descendants like Spanish and Italian) most feminine adjectives end in A...
Most masculine adjectives (and thus names) ended in -us, but those names have not retained quite as much popularity and/or their spellings have changed (e.g. Julius, Brutus, Rufus...)

It many European languages, every object has a "gender". It is considered either male or female. The verb, articles, adjectives, etc used with the noun are altered to match the gender of the object. For example, in many language you use "el" for "the" when speaking of a male, and "la" for "the" when speaking of a female.
One of the ways those languages distinguished between male and female was to end the noun with an "o" or "us" if male or an "a" of female.
That is why many female names ends with an "a". Also may many female version of male names are made by putting an "a" on the end of the name.
