The universe probably did create itself.
It started as a single space-time pulse.
A pulse that started from a finite potential sometime after time zero.
I never looked at it just like that but that is surely what happened.
That finite potential that existed before time started was the tool used by the universe to create itself.
It will also destroy itself when the time comes.
Good question!

The physicists expect to be able to devise a self-consistent theory, whereby the rules that govern the universe compel it to exist, and the nature of the universe compels it to follow those rules. However, if one accepts that the universe can't exist without the rules, and the rules can't exist without the universe, it still does not serve to answer the question of why both the rules, and the universe, go to the trouble of existing at all. Speculating about that runs the risk of drifting into theology.

It is not created . It existed . It is nature .Man does not believe that some thing can exist as something unborn . nateur goes on changing .It goes from something invisible to visible nd again something invisible .It is always a recycling of the mater that exists always .

If you define the universe (ALL spatial dimensions + time) as "everything that exists" and that everything that exists is within the universe, then yes, the universe must be responsible for maintaining its own existence.
