Yes it probably is set to UK.
To reset, back up your personal data and use the Acer Restore CD to do a Clean Install of XP. It should let you choose the correct Region Code for the DVD.
If not, call Acer tech support.

The answer is " Unfortunately Yes ".
When you put in and played your first DVD, This region specific code for that DVD was extracted to your DVD Burner.
There is a Program to Prevent the region change of the DVD Burner. The program can be set to Region .8 ( all Ships at Sea )
It can be downloaded from:
http://www.dvdidle.com/download.htm
From experience.
I use DVD Idle Pro in 3 Desktops and 1 Laptop ( ACER Aspire 1642WLMi ).
Good luck.

check the model no. of your dvd writer first(by software u can find on net)
then find a rpc1 firmware for it
rpc1-->no limit on region
rpc2-->5 times change on region of your dvd rom/writer
for rpc1 firmware : my experience is it will still prompt to change, but after u change the region code, the times for change is still 5, 5 forever
for rpc2 : 5->4->3->2->1->0, then u can't change it again
BUT!
if u flash firmware, then it will be 5 again XDDD
points to add :
1. dvd may not issued just for one region
e.g. Madonna Confession Tour DVD, there is 3,4,5 disc
and some manufacturer will make all region(it is common in asia, don't know about it in europe)
2. there are software that could change the region temporarily
but they have to match with the player program
just search for region free program and also how to use them
3. if I were u, I would use standalone dvd player to watch dvd
as many of them are already "region free"

Go to dvd manufacter web site and check to see if you can get a firmware up grade. I did it on my Lite-on and now it's region free, whitch is what they all should be in first place.
