I bought a water bubbler and i bought the 5 gallon jugs i fill them up at my local grocery store in a water fill station i dont know how to clean them though they are starting to smell and i did clean one with bleach and water but dont you have to scrub the insides with something or will the bleach touching it kill on contact any other ideas would be great thank you

fill with warm water half way then add one cup of white vinegar replace top and shake vigorously then rinse with hot thats it ! Good Luck !

Yeah, the bleach will clean them. Actually sitting them out in the sun will do just about as good or better of a job. Sunlight is a natural disinfectant.

Next time you get an empty jug, don't just cap it and let it sit. Drain as much of the water out as you can leave the cap off so it can dry. If you cap it and it gets moist and hot inside it will start wanting to build up mold inside and will get all funky smelling.

I'd probably leave the bleach in overnight and swish the water around inside pretty good. Bleach takes a little bit to kill all the bacteria. And the swishing of the water will help clean it, just like the swishing water in your dishwasher helps clean your dishes. Actually, that makes me think, it might be best instead of bleach to actually use some regular or anti-bacterial dish soap. The dish soap wouldn't leave that funky taste in the water.

when i would clean a 5 gal. jug for workers , i would clean it with bleach and water and then rinse it with water and baking soda to get rid of the bleach taste

Bleach usually kills everything it touches! But you can use hot, soapy water and swish it around in the jug (just make sure you rinse well ~ soapy bleach water doesn't sound too appetizing!).

Bleach kills every thing. But you should not have to clean water jugs.
