Being older and definitely wiser, I think I can help you. I was raised in Ann Arbor, MI, then as a young adult moved around to larger cities, some equivalents of A.A., plus I traveled with a rock band for awhile and saw a few cities and towns all over the U.S.A. When I finally decided to "settle down" in a career I looked for a University with the best teacher certification. That's when I discovered the Upper Peninsula of Michigan! Particularly Marquette which boasts a regional medical center with some of the best doctors, an affordable and diverse university, renowned in bicycle, cross country ski, and sled dog magazines for premiere races plus golf magazine rated "Grey Walls" as one of the best courses. Marquette also has one of the longest beaches, hiking trails filled with natural waterfalls, wildlife, and fishing holes that draw elite fishermen. Marquette borders the largest and deepest fresh water lake (Superior) in the world with Hiawatha and Isle Royal National Parks nearby to name a few natural wonders. I have heard folks say that it is the safest and most affordable place to raise a family. You can't get more serene than Marquette, MI--a "Superior" location.

If you like warm weather, Cape Coral, Florida is one of the fastest growing cities in the US (plenty of new work opportunities) and has one of the lowest crime rates. Hurricane Charlie hit it directly: no one died, no homes were completely destroyed, because severe building codes are enforced. It is very cosmopolitan for a city of 160,000 people. It is surrounded by some of the world's most beautiful beaches and 100's of islands of all sizes.
