If your mileage is about the 50,00 mark, it`s almost certain to be the Idle Air Control Valve.
Any easy replacement, don`t bother trying to clean the old one as you`ll only get another couple of hundred miles before you need to do it again ! So only do the job once !

pps They only cost about £85 at independent part suppliers. If you REALLY want to get ripped off, go to your local Vauxhall dealer !

Does it only happen when slowing down, say coming to a traffic light put in neutral and it dies .Is the engine management light on ,if it is find a good garage with a reader plug it in and they should be able to tell you what the problem is .I am in the same boat my vectra wont cruise it splutters when trying to stay at a constant speed bought a new throttlebody with idle air contol, air mass meter £300 still not right .Could be numerous things .sensors everywhere. If your engine management light isnt on ,its like looking for a needle in a haystack although idle air control valves are a common fault (pre 1999 you can clean them)after its a sealed unit so its a new one about£200-£250.hope this helps .GOOD LUCK

There's probably a page long list of problems that could cause those symptoms. I'm not familiar with that car; however, the most common problems for fuel injected cars that do this are:

dirty fuel filter
Throttle Position Sensor needs to be adjusted
dirty air filter
mass air flow sensor faulty or has loose connection
some other sensor is faulty or unplugged
EGR valve (if equipped) is bad

I was going to suggest the Idle Air Control Valve, but Cosmo beat me to it.
