craft out every fifty years and the daughter colonies did the same and their colonies the same as well, and so on. how long would it take for all 200 billion stars in the galaxy to have been visited? it's not as long as you think. so where are they?

If we assume that a civilisation sends self-replicating probes they would cover the galaxy even faster. This is one of the classic arguments against the existence of advanced civilisations elsewhere in the galaxy.

Actually longer than you think, since each colony would have to already contain enough people for a diverse genetic pool or they would be a started colony and more would follow in a year or so. Those colonies could not send out anyone until their population density hit a point where they could afford to risk sending out a large chunk etc.

Maybe they're slow breeders, or slow builders, or just started last Tuesday, 6 billion light years away! Most planets are unsuitable, whatever the species, and only a proportion of stars have planets, most of those being low in metals, so your assumptions are extremely overoptimistic. Or maybe they don't like travelling away from home. More likely, they don't exist!
