Australia and Japan and a number of other countries also drive on the left.
The French were the first to use the right hand side, going back to Napoleon, who happened to be left handed, He found that riding horses along the left, which was common practise was a disadvantage to him. He would have had his sword/gun in his left hand, so he made everyone use the other side too.
When the USA got it's independance from Britain, the French were the 1st to offer the new country recognition. They sent them the statue of liberty, and as a result, the new country followed on the French tradition and used the right hand side to drive along.

It originally came from when horses were driven using a "coach and four" arrangement with the carriage and four horses with the driver/rider sitting on one of the front horses. In England they sat on the horse that would be on the drivers right, and in Europe they sat on the horse that would be on the drivers left. When passing an oncoming coach the convention was that you moved your coach so that you and the other horseman passed "beside" each other. When roads started to become two lanes the convention continued.
