they're dangerous so they don't have to be friendly.

It depends on the type of snake you have. Some snakes are very friendly like the Corn Snakes-ideal for beginners. Other snakes have attitude probs. I found my King snake did. If snakes are hungry and you try to pick them up, then they might go for your finger . Many a time I have walked round the garden with my Northern Pine snake slung round my shoulder!. Snakes are like peope-some friendly, some not, but they are all wild animals and you have to respect that

They're just defensive. Birds are one of the biggest predators of snakes, and people freak out when they reach straight down on their snake and get bitten... ANYTHING grabbing for a snake is a predator in it's mind, there is no such thing as a "friend" in the mind of a snake. Yes, there is "The Thing that Feeds Me" but that's two different things.
Also, the more jumpy and nervous you are around a snake, the more jumpy and nervous it will be, slow deliberate movements are best when going to pick up or while handling a snake. Anyway, there you go.

snakes are actually very friendly...im a owner of a few...the only time they really dont want to be bothered is after they eat or during shedding...mine have never struck at me or anyone else that has handled them...wild snakes are not so easy going because they have to hunt for their food and defend themselves from predators everyday...when they feel threatened they strike...but if you leave them alone they wont care that your there...snakes arent as bad as people think...you have more of a chance to get bit by a cat bird or dog then you do a snake...striking it their last resort most of the time they flee!

Because snakes are not domesticated. It has taken years to turn a wolf into the average pet dog and to turn a wild cat into the average pet cat but it may take longer to domesticate reptiles or it may not ever happen. Every animal whether domesticated or not has the ability to be aggressive.

Like most animals, snakes will strike for either food or to defend itself. In the latter event it doesn't wait to be attacked, it takes the initiative just in case. Rattlesnakes give audible warning of their presence, but other types are not able to do that. Respect their space and their independence and you will not be attacked.

Nature is cruel - snakes are not domesticated animals. In a kill or be killed world, they will see you as a threat if you provoke it. Most snakes will not strike if you stay clear of them.
