No XP CD, no way.

If 98 runs OK, keep using it, it's likely safer than it ever was.

Try Kubuntu Linux, free.

Short answer....No.

You could try ghosting your desktop HDD to your Laptop HDD and prey to the software gods that XP can handle it and install the correct drivers for its new environment, but then you would have the problem of activating Windows which you would need another valid CD key for.

Another point to consider is that if your laptop came with Windows 98, will it have enough grunt to run Windows XP?

You can install Install Windows XP from the network, but you will need to have right set of tools for it.

You can use Files and Settings Transfer Window in Windows XP, however, I am not sure if it can be done from a Windows 98 box.
