1. First remove all unnecessary software / data from your drive.
2. Make sure you have enough free space on your boot drive (for swap file) should be at least 2wice your mem size
3. Lastly defragment (Use something like norton speedisk ) which does a better job of optimization then standard defrag.
4. Clean up you installed programs in memory & startup
5. Clean up the desktop (more icons takes up more resources than you imagine)

It certainly doesn't hurt to do such a thing.

If you've had the same install of Windows for a long time, things start to get bogged down after a while. Lots of programs start running at startup that you don't really ever use, and it takes up precious memory.

My advice would be go to 'Start > All Programs > Run' and type in "msconfig" (without the quotation of course). This brings up a dialog box. If you click the 'Startup' tab, you can go through and start unchecking items that you don't ever use or don't really care if it starts up. Be careful when going through this list, do not uncheck anything you don't recognize. The stuff in there will not adversely affect your windows or anything, but it can shut down things that you may want running if you don't pay attention to what you're unchecking (e.g., virus protection).

Good luck.

Defragmenting your hard drive would help but not as much as I think you're hoping for.

Something might be wrong with your hard drive. Run check disk.

Or check your hard drive under Everest. Under Menu, click Storage, then click Smart. Look out for abnormal indications under status.

Check out Everest here:

Probably some virus. Get a virus scan done or otherwise just throw it into the garbage.
