I have an old, complete system capable of running windows 98SE (166mhz intel, CD drive, 64mb ram). Unfortunately it has a completely blank hard drive and I can't find a good linux (or other free os) distro for it. It will be doing broadband internet browsing, word processing, accessing a network (with other new Windows XP Pro computers). A GUI is necessary, as is a completely blank install and bootable disk. I am very capable around hardware and software once into windows GUI, not so much dos-type stuff. Thanks in advance for your answers :-)

Please don't point out the obvious and READ THE QUESTION -windows is out of the question, it sucks and costs money. Freespire doesn't exist at that site and kubuntu won't run with those specs.

Windows 98 or ME would be cheap, 98 is the more stable, ME is the more featured. Because they are not current, no licence is required, therefor no dealer can actually sell it to you for more than about $10 or $20. An alternative used to be called Lindows, it is now called Linspire. However, your processor is not fast enough for either Linspire or Freespire. Your processor is not fast enough for SUSE. I hate to say it but WIN 98 may be your best choice unless you get a faster processor, and more memory. You can maybe try Slackware, it is supposed to run on any system 486 or newer.

I hate to tell you, but that computer is very out of date, and finding a new operating system is going to be extremely hard especially with only 64mb of ram. Honestly, that computer needs to be allowed to die, and you should salvage what you can from it.

The CD drive and the Hard Drive should get you some money, and this could go towards a new computer maybe? If you keep the monitor, you can get a Mac Mini for around US$600, which is a fairly good buy.

that's a very valid question. main reasons are: 1) new applications needing more power (video editing, java online apps, games), 2) old OS are no longer maintained, and whatever holes they had are not fixed, so they are a security issue *online*. these reason may not be compelling to you because you don't use new applications, or because you don't go online (or when you do you hide behind good protection and are careful). In which case you can spend your money on better things than IT supplies. Note that point 2 is one of the drivers of linux adoption: it is a new OS that runs fine on old hardware, but is maintained and safe (and free).

Kubuntu or FreeSpire Linux, both free and very similar to Windows.

I think the most your computer can handle with those specs is probably Windows ME or 2000, which probably cost more than the computer is worth.

Cant run XP like that. may not even be able to run these other two. Good luck
