It's VERY loosely based on the Battle of Thermopylae (an entirely awesome battle in itself, I don't see why they had to change it... sigh), and no, the Spartans did not win the battle, but the 300 Spartans and 1000 Thespians who fought on the final day did successfully cover the retreat of the rest of the Greek army (which was the real reason they remained).

Let's just say if you copy it down and submit it as a history paper you would get an "F." No, this comic, novel and movie are "inspired" by history. (Battle of Thermopylae) That is Hollywood's way of telling us that the author heard the names Spartans, Persians, and a couple of kings and stuff and fell asleep and dreamed up a whole Lord or the Spartans type happening. About as close to the Spartan story this gets is there was supposedly 300 Spartans and what happens to them in the end is true.

No, the Spartans were defeated but they killed thousands more than they lost.

It's based on a graphic novel (aka comic book) which was based on a true event. They take some liberties with the actual history, but for the most part it's fairly accurate.

Every so often the History Channel has a documentary about it.

It's a real life story and the Spartans didn't win. But their valor paved way to the unification of the Greek city-states in order to fight the Persians and through that unified army, the Persians were defeated.
