Is 1 inch 2.5 centimetres? I'm confused, some sites say that 5'10" is 180cm, whereas some sites say that 5'10" is 176cm...and there's a lot of different varieties, which is right??
My cousin measured his height at a doctor, and he was 5'8", but when he measured here, he was 172cm, which according to Yahoo is 5'6"...huh?

As with most units of measurement, there are actually 4 different definitions of an inch. However, since 1963 in the UK and 1959 in the UK one inch has been legally defined as exactly 2.54 cm.
5'10" at the correct conversion rate of 2.54 cm = 177.8 cm
if you use 2.5 cm you get 175 cm (so none of your two answers make sense anyway!! - sorry about that!)
Your cousin, if correctly measured at 5'8", is 172.72 cm tall.
Unit conversions are always confusing, and the devil is in the detail!

Convert feet and inches to one unit, that is to all inches... So, 5 feet 10 inches will be 5 feet * 12 inches = 60 inches add 10 inches (remaining) = 70 inches multiply the total by 2.54 (1 inch = 2.54 cm) =177.8 cm

5' 10" = 70 inches
1 foot = 12 inches
12 x 5 = 60 inches
60 + 10 = 70 inches

Mulltiply 2.54 times 70
2.54 x 70 = 177.8 centimeters
5' 10" = 177.8 centimeters
You are 177.8 centimeters tall

1 inch = 2.54 cm and 1cm = 0.3937 inches.
The difference is with how the sites round.
The measuring at the doctor and at home can be somewhat arbitrary if you are not doing it the same way with the same equipment.

Sometimes the conversion just isn't done right.
5'8" = 172.7cm.
5'10" = 177.8cm ~ 178cm. Some people might just round up to 180cm.

5'8" is 68" = 172.72cm
Just check the official imperial to metric conversion.

we have to be aware of the decimal numbers as well.. some people may use only 2.5cm.. this is where we get lost.
