It gives you a place to pretend you are scratching when someone catches you picking your nose.

It is your philtrum. The philtrum (Greek philtron, from philein, "to love; to kiss") is the vertical groove in the upper lip, formed where the nasomedial and maxillary processes meet during embryonic development.
The philtrum allows humans to express a much larger range of lip motions than would otherwise be possible, which enhances vocal and non-verbal communication.
When these processes fail to fuse fully, a cleft lip (sometimes called a "hare lip") can result.
A flattened or smooth philtrum can be a symptom of Fetal alcohol syndrome

I can remember a long time ago. Long before my birth. I was waiting with those who were not yet born. When we're not born yet, we know everything. Everything that will happen. When it's your turn, the Angels of Oblivion place a finger on your mouth. "Shh..." It leaves a mark on the upper lip. It means that you have forgotten everything. But the angels missed me.- It's from a movie but it seems very realistic to me.

Useful?....Why yes, of course...it is there to intrigue the opposite sex...for the purpose of wondering just how delicious it may be to kiss!

*I would not normally answer a question like this, but my husband has that 'dent'...and I remember the first thing I thought the day I met him...mmmm, I want to kiss him! I apologize if my answer did not quite fit the answer of which you were looking. Thank you for bringing back a memory :)
