Today I got into an arguement with my step dad and he threatened to "beat the **** out of me". While the rest of my family thinks he doesn't mean it, I do. I'm a fifteen year old girl and he's a forty year old man. If I called the police and told them this, what could they do for me?

The threat has to be imminent; meaning that it will happen right away; also, it appears that everyone but you believes he won't beat you. Has your step dad beaten you in the past? Why do you feel he will beat you now? You need to show why your subjective fear is reasonable.

Did he place a condition on the beating, such as,"If you ever see that boy again, I'll beat the..."? Did you engage in illegal activity, in casusing your step dad to threaten you?

Unless your step dad has beaten you in the past, the cops will treat the threat as just an empty threat.

Good luck!

There's a chance that children's services could get involved and you could begin a process that might end up with you in a foster home. Don't enter this lightly. If yoou are seriously threatened, that's one thing; if it was a heat of the moment adult frustration with a teen ager, let it go.

They would take your complaint and start a file. They might get Family Service involved. They would also talk to him and advise him on the laws concerning threatening.

Give it a try. At best it will be a learning experience for both of you.

absolutely nothing. They will tell you there is nothing they can do until he actually does it. Then they will tell you to call Child Protective Service.
