I am independent as in I examine the platforms of each candidate before casting my vote. On a single ballot, I may vote for a few Dems, a few Reps, one or two Libertarians, and maybe a couple of Independents... I never vote straight ticket.
I like the foreign policy of the Reps and do not trust the Dems at all with foreign affairs. I think the Reps are a lttle too anal about their guns... I don't mind citizens having them, I just think that Reps get too bent out of shape over adding safety features...
Also, I believe both Dems and Reps are utterly clueless about education... both of them disparage public education so they can make themselves look good when they propose all kinds of educational reform. The best thing that could ever happen to this country's public education would be for politicians to just stay out of it.

Also a Libertarian here. I second what the guy above me said. The nanny-state Democrats tax you out of your money to pay for programs you don't support, yet claim they're better on civil liberties. Really? I don't see a lot of Democrats in Congress supporting gay marriage or gun rights. The Republicans are annoying because they try to talk a good game, but they've shown themselves willing to expand the size of government beyond recognition. Ultimately, the Republicans are about keeping themselves in employment. It's fun to talk about reducing the size of government until people start to realize that they can do just fine without you - that maybe your expensive salaries, pensions, and perks aren't worth it. So, both parties are despicable to me. I don't think the Libertarians have a chance, but I got tired of selling my soul every time I voted Republican.

I'm not an independent, I'm a Libertarian.
What I don't like about either party is the lack of principles, and the lack of contact with realism when it comes to what they think they stand for.
Liberals think they stand for freedom, by insisting that people who earn money be partially enslaved in the form of taxes. They think everyone should be free to do what they want, and others should be required to pay for it.
Conservatives think they stand for smaller government, while voting for a government large enough to make sure that gay people don't get married and people only use chemicals that they approve of to enjoy themselves.
Neither one makes any sense.
I'd support any candidate that would swear he's read the Constitution, and would vote against or veto any measure not found in the plain text of the document. If they all would abide by this, we'd have smaller government and freedom.
