This means to intentionally score fewer points than you can. It is still possible to win.
Let's say that one team was destined to beat the other 33 to 21. So instead of getting that last touchdown, they miss and only win 26 to 21. It would seem like it does not matter, right?
Wrong. Bettors bet on "the spread". This is not only who wins, but by how many points. So winning by 5 points instead of 12 points can make a huge difference in betting outcomes.
It is illegal to "shave" points.

What Does Shaving Points Mean

not doing the best on the field you can as an athlete. games have pointspreads that people bet on, say one team is favored to win by 10 points, an athlete may bet on the other team to cover the 10 points, so if your team is up by 7 and you as a qb have a wide open receiver in the endzone rather than get him the ball and be up by 14, you would make a bad pass, fumble, etc to not make the play. or as a wr you would drop the ball, as a rb you may fumble the ball, or trip before scoring, thus shaving points to make sure that your bet wins

intentionally making bad plays so your team will not cover the "point spread" related to sports book betting.
