EDIT: Actually, now that I think about it, I would guess that it was a jumping spider, probably a Pelegrina. Wolf Spiders can have stripes, but I've never known one to have stripes that are circular.

That sounds like an ordinary wolf spider. They're harmless.

The ones you should be worried about are Brown Recluses. They're a solid light brown colour with orange-ish joints where the legs meet the body.

The other dangerous one, of course, is the Black Widow. It's a solid black spider with a red mark on the abdomen.

lucky you! UGA doing a recluse study. Here is the link:

I do not understand why people freak out over spiders... I find them fascinating and would NEVER consider killing one just because it was near me. Just get it in a jar or something and let it out the door...
here is a link that might help you id them and determine if they are dangerous or not the next time you see one. Sounds like a wolf spider to me!

OK, that story gave me goosebumps while I'm sitting here with a 110 degree laptop on my legs. I have seen my mother step on a spider with her bare foot ... which really makes me question if we are truly related.

I spent a little while trying to find a picture of a spider that matches your description, but I'm going to have nightmares if I look at any more. Makes me shudder to see them on the screen.

But I'll pick up a snake.

it kinda sounds like a brown recluse. and yes they are poisonous. they are hard to kill and are just about everywhere. you need to have your house treated to get rid of any more that might be hiding so that you dont take a chance of night bites. good luck and know that you arent alone in your fear of spiders
