While on vacation in Florida, I saw many homes with large cages/tents on their backyard porch that went all the way up to the roof. I assumed this was to keep alligators out, but is there a specific name for these cages/tents?

Um... those are screened in pool enclosures or back porches. Mostly to keep insects and stuff like that out and still allow breezes to come through.

You don't need anything to keep alligators out, they don't try to get into people's houses. If they want in your pool that bad, a screen won't stop them. (This does happen.)

Alligators don't fly, beside a gator would walk right through those little "bug rooms" your talking bout, which means these ain't for gators boy These are "bug rooms, or bug free rooms, the retires put them up so the can drink there whatever with out swatting bugs.

its just a screen room for the pool or deck...to keep leaves from getting in the pool, or lettimg bugs in the porch...no alligator cages....but it doesnt hurt to be curious
