Secnario is something like this.. I have issued a cheque of my account. Later I want to stop the payment for the issued party has not done the work he was supposed to do. I do not have any legal contract with this party. If i isssue a stop payment on the cheque and he places the cheque for clearance, and my bank returns the cheque, Would it be treated as a offence? Can the issued party take me to court on the basis of the cheque issued? And for what time period is a issued cheque valid from the date of issue?

Usually a check is good for at least 6 months unless it states that it is only good for 90 days, which some corporate checks state. Now as to the check you put a stop payment on, this is not a offense that would lead to your arrest. However, if you did receive service or goods from the individual you wrote the check to he/she may take you to court for failure to pay. If you are disputing the quality of the work or an unfinished job he still may take you to court to receive a partial payment. These are the typical law and way things are done in the USA.
