I'm doing an online vet assistant course that I am almost done with. I have also taken equine classes at my local college and will being taking animal science next semester. Those are the only animal related classes at my local JC, but like I said I am almost done with an online class. I want to begin going to vet office's and appling but I'm not sure how to go about it. I would be completley happy starting out just cleaning up after the animals or whatever I have to start out doing I just really want to work in that field. So I was just wondering if anyone has any advice on how to go about trying to get the job, or anything more I can do to help insure getting a job at a vet's office. I live in California, if that makes any diffrence.
Thanks I really appreciate any advice.

hey there i am in australia and i am studying to be a vet nurse i am doing voluntry work for our local vet which is good as you get the hands on experience so maybe you coulkd start by doing some voluntry work to show your keen and are genuinely interested. its one way of getting your foot in the door and proving yourself (better than putting a resume in )

If you were originally interested in nursing then I would become a vet tech. It's only a two year program following your high school diploma, whereas vet school is 4 years following a 4 year undergraduate degree. You don't need to start as an assistant, but that could be a good way to get a feel for the job and be close to techs you can talk to. As an assistant you are also in a position to get your vet tech degree online, because you'll have a place to do the hands-on clinical part of the coursework. Check out the site below, it will answer a lot of your questions.

Ring around your local vets and ask if they take on trainees. If yes, pen a really impressive letter to the ones that do - do a proper professional resume and big yourself up loads.

Be prepared to have to send a LOT of letters. I sent 20 letters to get my first job, only about 6 even replied, and I only actually got an offer from one place! I have a friend who sent off about 100 and only got an offer from one place. Settle yourself in for the long haul - it's worth it!

Hey there.

My name is Samantha. I am a vet in Australia.

When i was aplying for my 1st job, you just have to be cool, calm and colected. If you are as passionate about the job as you seem, show them that. Tell them how much you know about animals, what you have done to study in the field, and WHY you wan to have the job.

Hope i have helped,
Sam

Just go to your vet (of you use one for your animals) and explain your situation to the vet. I asked my vet about working for him after we went in for an exam and he told me I was welcome to volunteer but that I had to be 16 to work in the back. He even checked to make sure I still could work there and was very nice. I don't have my tech license yet, but I should have it within 2 years.
