Replace your cap and rotor. You should have done that first.
Coil packs are either in the distributor cap housing or separate, to the two dumbasses that are criticizing me!
If he has a distributorless ignition, he should state that. Otherwise, one would assume he has a distributor. He has not even mentioned what model or year Pontiac he has. He can't even capitalize Pontiac either.

bubba bubba bubba , when will you people learn to not just throw parts at a car , when you dont know what the hell you are doing !!!!!! you have a plugged up cat or exhaust system . take a vacuum gauge and connect it to manifold vacuum , rev the engine to 2500 rpm and hold , if the vacuum reading on the gauge gradually drops to low vacuum , then you have a restricted exhaust . the fact that it gets worse when you plug the egr is because with the egr valve fully closed , there is now no where for the exhaust backpressure to go , thus making it worse. or remove the 02 sensor before the catalyst and test drive and see if it gets better , if so then replace the catalytic converter . BY THE WAY IT WOULD OF COST YOU LESS IF YOU WOULD OF TOOK IT TO A SHOP TO HAVE IT DIAGNOSED RIGHT THE FIRST TIME , ALL YOUR SYMPTOMS ARE CLASSIC FOR CLOGGED EXHAUST . BURRO

There is a module in the line from your air cleaner in to the intake manifold that is known to cause that problem. It is real bad on Cameros, Firebirds and Transams. It is tied to the drive train computer and does just as you describe. It has to do with getting the right air/fuel mixture during different driving conditions. Had a hell of a time finding it on one of my wife's Cameros and didn't like the $65 cost, but made for a happy wife.

I vote for plugged up exhaust as well. Make sure you get it looked at or you'll melt the inside of your cat.
Cap and rotor? Are you stoned? He said he changed the coil packs, why would he have a distributor?

To the person above me, he replaced the coil packs...that means its a distributorless ignition so replacing the cap and rotor wouldnt do any good cause the car has neither!

and people always think mechanics are trying to rip them off it seems like you ripped off yourself, the most likely cause is a clogged catalytic converter could even be the pcv valve
