Hayward is pretty safe, I hope the first post didn't scare you. But it is isolated (isolato) and depending what part you live in it may be difficult to get to more interesting places like San Francisco. If you are close to the buses or Metro it won't be so bad, but prepare for a very different life from Italy! Hayward is a small city. Will you be studying at Cal State? Hayward is not the best place in California... it's close to Oakland so it's not very safe but you are not too far from everything. Hayward is close to San Francisco & San Jose and there is always a lot to do there. A few beaches not too far away.

Hayward is a suburb. You really need to go up to Berkeley or San Francisco for fun, but pretty close.
