read some of the history of the Mexican War of 1845..at the time no one gave the US a chance of winning........except for the huge convultion of the Cival War, the US military was a small compact, sometimes not very well trained equipped or led operation up to 1898, when we became aworld power and had to accept the responsibilities of a world power.....US Army in 1890 was barely 10,000 men, US Navy was ranked 13th in the world......

As a response to countpet.. comments , the burning of the white house was a response to American burning of buildings in York , now Toronto , and in Niagara on the Lake .And I really don`t think they were drunk to pull that off successfully. Canadian soldiers are professional .
As for the strength of the American military during the 1800`s it had a lot of action with the Mexican war and civil war but tactics have obviously changed completely by today's standard , but were capable but not as unified as today .It was more organized at the State levels or militias as I understand but I am not an expert in American military history.

3rd rate, its strength was in its isolation, back then it was very difficult to wage war on a country so far away.

Not much, the reason the white house is white is that a bunch of drunken Canadians set fire to it, so it was painted..
