superior - .350 and above
good - .300 ~ .349
average - .250 ~ .299
crappy - .249 and below

They're just decimal values of how often they hit the ball.

OK, .300 traditionally has been the mark of a good batting average, and .200 and below has been a poor one. The average batting average (a mouthful) has gone up from .260 to .275 or so in the last several years, so that affects perceptions. A .250 average used to be OK; now it's a little less than that.

A great hitter will be above .330 or so, and .370 or above comes up about once a decade if that (depending on the decade).

One other point: expectations change on position. A catcher or shortstop usually can get away with a lower average, simply because he plays a key defensive position.

A good average would be .300 - .330 with a superior average being above that. and a crappy one would be below .250

If you want to figure a batting average you take the number of hits divided by the number of at-bats so if you have 35 hits and 122 at-bat your average would be .286

Ok..Batting averages are based on the number of hits in a given number of at bats..So say in a game a player has 2 at bats and gets 2 hits, for that game his batting avg. would be 1.000%...These stats are compiled over the entire season..A good average in the MLB is upper .200s..So if you hear someone is hitting 298..that means that their batting average is .298 out of a possibly 1.000..Sounds ridiculous I know, but baseball is probably the only sport where being under 50% is a good stat..Not too many players these days get a batting average consistently over .300 for the entire season..But a batting average over .300 I would consider superior..Last season for instance there were only 37 players in the enitre major league with a batting average of .300 or higher..Hope that helps!

Batting average is figured by number of hits (reaching base by putting the ball in play) to number of at bats (attempts, walks don't count). A good batting average is between .280-.320, superior would be anything over .320. Average would be .240-.280, crappy is anyhting under .240

Batting averages

Above .330 is great >Usually only 4-8 players in all of MLB have a BA over .330 for the season>full time players, that is<

Over .300 is very good > there are usually 20-40 players in all of MLB that hit over .300

between .260 & .270 is a historical average for baseball >This has remained constant for many decades. >The vast majority of MLB players hit between .240 and .290 >to show you how fine a line that is >over 600 at bats the difference between a .240 hitter and a .290 hitter is 30 hits<

A BA of .225 is bad

Below .200 is terrible
