Mine started smiling when he was almost a month old. He started to giggle at about four months. There's a very wide spectrum of normal, some babies smile and laugh earlier than others.
And even if it is "just gas," it's still cute, isn't it? Enjoy it, it'll be too soon when she's a teenager and broods all the time.

you will learn as time goes by, not to worry about developmental rates unless she is WAY behind on soemthing, like not talking until she is 4 or not being able to walk by 2, or huge things like that. Not making eye contact and responding at 4, 5, or 6 months. Those are things you need to worry about. Literally every single child develops differently and the average rates are just that...average. Just like the average age to potty train is 2, well first of all that is anywhere in the whole year of being 2, and that also means that some dont potty train until 3 or 4. I know it is hard, with my first, I judged him by everyone else, if their baby was crawling why wasn't mine, was there something wrong. Our society makes us worry about everything, then on top of it, being a mother, it is natural to worry. Now I am having my 4th and 5th and I just let my children develop as they will, no pressure on child or mom. Good luck and enjoy those smiles. PS just so you know, my youngest smiled when he was just a few days old, a real smile, not just gas. My oldest didnt really smile for a long time, he was just very observant, but didn't seem to show much emotion.

All babies develop differently. My son is 2 now and he was a very quiet baby he didn't make many sounds unless he was hungry. My daughter is 7 months old and she is always making sounds. She started early to I have a picture of her when she was 3 weeks old smiling.....not a very big one but you can tell it is a smile. Next time she goes in for a check up just let the doctor know of the things she has been doing. Congrats and Good Luck the first one is always the hardest.

My son was grinning ear to ear when he was 7 days old, of course he didn't know why. Baby smiles are so precious, treasure them. All babies are special regardless of their level of development. Congratulations!

Most people will tell you it is only gas. But, my daughter would like right at us & smile & then stop when she turned away. She started this at 2mo. I don't know that you'll be able to know for sure- But, just enjoy it either way.

both my girls smiled from birth. that "its just gas" stuff is total nonsense. Do you smile when you have gas? Really, I don't and I don't think baby does either! I have heard of babies laughing that early, but I do think it is unusual.
