Marriage vows are promises a couple makes to each other during a wedding ceremony. In Western culture, these promises have traditionally included the notions of affection ("love, comfort, keep"), faithfulness ("forsaking all others"), unconditionality ("for richer or for poorer", "in sickness and in health"), and permanence ("as long as we both shall live", "until death do us part"). Most wedding vows are taken from traditional religious ceremonies. Touching love poems or lyrics from a love song can be revised as wedding vows. Some couples choose to write their own vows, rather than relying on standard ones spoken by the celebrant (priest).

They should be a personal, completely honest pledge to one another of what you are willing to do, feel, promise during your marriage. In many cases though, they are just canned routine phrases that no one means sincerely.

Some vow promise obedience. That's just wrong. Neither party in a marriage is a dog. A promise to love and honor is simple and hopefully truthful. The "as long as we both shall live" and "for better or for worse" promises are not usually honestly meant or kept.

If a couple writes their own vows, it is supposed to mean something. Otherwise, it's a bunch of empty words, and that is why the divorce rate in the USA is so very high.

It is a spiritual thing to make vows and to even think about be marry to someone. That is why people make there own vow something that they can keep between the bride and groom. Because marriage is ordained by God.

wedding vows are basically promising to love the person and be faithful until one partner has passed on, some people choose to write their own but bottom line is they are promising the same thing but with alot more words.

No matter what I tell you it won't mean a thing to you, unless you are at the alter with your husband to be getting ready to say the vows with your mate then and only then will it mean anything.

They are a committment to each other, before God and friends, family to a lifetime or faithfulness, even in rough times. They are biblically-based. Most of the time the bride and groom sincerely commit, at the time. Things change though, and it's a tough, rough commitment at times - the weak of heart never make it. "Issues," such as dishonesty, deception, alcoholism, drug addiction, other character defects, etc. tend to ruin the relationship unless the issues are fully-resolved.

They are not to be taken lightly.
