It used to be that the "6th" digit was supposed to represent the last number of the year.

X X X X X 0X X .... would be 1970

Do not know about the '60's.

Gm and chryslers, the 6th digit shows the year. "9" would be 1969....."0" would be 1970. Ford I think used the first digit.

You don't know from the VIN, but you do know from the title, and the registration, and perhaps even the insurance card.
