I have recently been accepted to both of these schools, but I have no idea which one to choose! I'm interested in the social sciences or humanities.

Most likely something in International Studies combined with Political Science or English.

Anyone have any (credible) insight into the differences between both schools?? (besides the social atmosphere b/c i know that California and the East coast ivy league are very different)?

With your interest Yale would be the better choice especially if you are entering the international areas - closure and better connected with all the international agencies in Washington DC, Standford does have a better social school dealing with communication - both schools are demanding but you find outside the University - California will be a more relaxed atmosphere - the East Coast is bit more conservative - but your focus should be where you want to be when you graduate - you can always study at Yale and live and work in California - especially if you focus on Asia in your studies

Seems to me you want to settle on your major first. Try going to your nearby community college and see if their career development office will help you with attitude/aptitude tests. The sooner you nail down a specific career goal, the sooner you know the major you want--and then you can check professional journals and ask professors from other colleges to learn about the reputation of the departments at Stanford and Yale.

To find out about atmosphere, there's no substitute for actually visiting campus yourself. I dropped in unannounced at several schools when I was choosing an MA program, and it was a great investment of my time and the cost of an unlimited two-week bus pass. I know it's a tall order to hit both coasts, but if your family can afford those schools, a couple of discount plane tickets wouldn't be a bad investment.

Well Condi Rice came out of Stanford but
The real atmosphere is an issue too . . .
Stanford has much better weather most the year .
I love the idea of Yale but can't imagine dealing with that east coast winter weather (OK , I'm a wimp )
Do the main year at Stanford and summer classes at Yale . . .
The best of both worlds.

First of all, congratulations... I graduated from U.C. Berkeley.... I grew up in and around Stanford University so I might be biased. Since you have an idea of what you want to major in, investigate what each school offers with respect to your desired interests. Think about finances... who offers the most... I don't know about Yale but Stanford does a good job of taking care of their students.. Good luck.

well, first of all congrats on getting into both those great schools!!! i've spent two summers at stanford. it has a beautiful campus, nice weather year round, beautiful architecture, dorms are really nice, foods actually pretty good, etc. never been to yale, but if you watch a couple episodes of gilmore girls you'll get the feel for it (rory goes to yale). also, you can take virtual tours at their websites. stanford.edu and yale.edu. you can also get tons of information on the different majors that each school specifies in their website.

Congrats on your acceptance! I went to Harvard and I think, for what you want to study, you will find more opportunities at Yale.
