I taught myself to play the guitar. I printed out some of my favorite songs with the guitar chords off the internet, and used some books I already had with chords along with the songs. Just look at the music; use the squares that show the strings and which strings to press down. Learn to play a song like that (I found it helped to sing it) and eventually your fingers will learn how to do the chords.
Good luck!

Yeah. Teach yourself. I took guitar lessons..... It didn't really help at all. I hated going there. I taught myself songs I like (The Beatles) and I'm doing fine. YouTube is a great site to look for lessons, because you can pick which song you want, and it's completely free! So yeah, teach yourself. You will have way more fun, won't block your schedule, and you can learn songs you actually feel like playing.

First get you a chord chart (your books may have them)
Learn to make 3 chords preferably in either of these combinations: A-D-G or D-G-C or E-A-D or E-B-A
Which ever is the easiest for you to make.
Practice changing chords while strumming the guitar
Read instructions in books for techniques. As you progress
you'll be learning more chords and riffs. It will help if you
had someone you could play alone with. learning the chords
is the easy part. The important thing is your rhythm or
timing-- The basic fundamental of music

Rocket go to your local music store confer with them about learning to play there is a wealth of beginner books starting with the very basics. But as a guitar player for many years books are good but one on one tutoring by some one that already plays is much better most music stores have col ledge student's or clerk's that give lessons for reasonable fee's Good Luck AND ROCK ON DUDE.

i'm teaching my self too.
i went to itunes in the podcast section and they have these little 15 minute clips of lessons that are free and they are amazing and very helpful. its like you have a teacher right there beside you. and you can do the lesson for as long as you need and then move on when you think you have it down. i've been doing this for the last 2 weeks everyday and i'm already playing songs!! plus, its free a huge plus to me!
also i found a magazine for beginners called play guitar which is really cool. on there website playguitar.com they have an offer for 1 free issue so check it out.
good luck!!

Avoid sight reading...that is tab for piano.
Get tabs.
Get a teacher for at least a few sessions to learn the basics, otherwise it will take years to learn what you can learn in a few weeks.

Work onchords to begin with. Learn songs you like as it makes it much easier and is more rewarding when you finally learn the full piece.
Play with other guitarists, you'll learn loads.
Check out websites like www.ultimate-guitar.com, they have thousands of songs and good exercises.

Learn the standard ABCDEFG chords and then learn the 3 chord progressions (triad), learn the bar chord (all punk and metal). Then you will truly be awesome.
