I believe the weather front you spoke of has come from Texas and Oklahoma and met up with one of our cold air masses. Something about the jet stream hanging lower than usual.

They will deny it, but I think it was retaliation for the huge quantities of topsoil that the US gained (and refuses to return) because the glaciers pushed it out of Canada during the last Ice Age.
