Good question. I think it's because they have this very large thing called an EGO and that part of their brain looks around and asks, " So, big guy, is THIS all you're ever going to do with your life?"
Then, they either get really overconfident and think that they can/should do everything and anything they have never allowed themselves to do (see if they can score with a younger woman, try drugs) or they get really depressed and think they are never going to amount to anything (drink, give up on God).
One of my best male friends just got up one Saturday morning, turned over and said to his wife "I don't want to be married any more". Left her and the three kids and within three months was shacking up with a woman 20 years his junior. Another guy I've known for 35 years announced to his family that he was leaving the church and the family (six children) and marrying a 31 year old administrative assistant -he was 61 at the time. The 31 year old wife left him after one child and an eight month marriage.
Go figure.
Being male, I can't explain it. But, I do believe that something happens to most of us - call it male menopause, mid-life crisis, passage crisis, whatever - thankfully, only a small number actually do something really stupid and ruin our lives and the lives of others that care about us.
If there is a pill for it, we should all start taking it around 40 or so. By 70, it should be over. Maybe start a research foundation "for the Support of Male Mystery Medicine". Our entire society would benefit.

Hmmmm When should this be happening to me? I'm not married, I won't do drugs, I won't drink alcohol, and I'm already not religious. What's left for me to do? Should I get married so I can cheat on her??? LOL...Not all men go through a midlife crisis and lose things or start doing something out of character for them. Everyone is different.

I thought they usually buy a sports car or motorcycle. They also sometimes pierce their ear or get a tattoo. It is their way of fighting the losing battle of age creeping up on them.

It's hormonal, just like menopause for women...
Men see their end coming, and they're afraid of death, so they lose all their inhibitions one last time, while they still have the energy!

Then, by your definition, I've never had a mid-life crisis. What a relief.

They miss their younger life. This, of course, does not excuse their behavior.
