The star is an Amish tradition of placing a star on the barn as a good luck symbol. If you travel to the Lancaster, PA area you will see many stars on barns, houses,& businesses for luck. You will also see many of the Amish 'hex' signs and other symbols.
A 5-pointed star either in red or done in metal (often allowed to rust on purpose) is most often seen on houses.

They are now just a rustic decoration, but the originals which were heavy metal and smaller. Theu were used to show that people had paid up their dues for a particular fire company. You see them in old cities like Philadelphia and Boston.

I've read these answers and they are all strange to me. The only time that I've seen a star are peoples houses is at Christmas time.
I think that is for the star that led them to Jesus. At Christmas we always have a star on the Christmas tree top. This is the only star that I know about that has something to do with Christmas.
