Yep, it's called "A Walk to Remember". I didn't see the movie but I read the book -- author is Nicholas Sparks and he writes some very sensitive stories.
If your mom likes to read, she might like this book. There are a couple of other Nicholas Sparks books that have been made into movies, too:
The Notebook
Message in a Bottle
And "Nights in Rodanthe" is in pre-production according to IMDB.com.
