I REALLY like Kaspersky Internet Security...its a bit expensive but it catches pretty much everything. It updates itself every few hours and is very light on the resources. The free anti-virus programs like AVG are okay but if you want top notch security Kaspersky is the way to go. You can try it for free and decide for yourself at www.kaspersky.com

The reality is that anti-virus and firewall programs alone are not enough to protect you against many types of hacker tools and other cyber-attacks. Even using both a firewall and anti-virus together, you are still vulnerable to spyware, Trojan horses, remote access tools (RATs), password crackers, keystroke loggers, and much more.
Just as important, anti-virus and firewall programs do not provide you with critical security patches for your computer software. Microsoft issued thousands of security patches to their operating systems and other software last year. How many of those patches did you apply to your own computer? How many software security holes do you still have in your Windows operating system, Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet Explorer, etc? Closing these well-known security holes is imperative to keep hackers and the new hybrid worms off your computer.
You need more than just your anti-virus program or a firewall; you need a comprehensive security solution for your PC if you don't want hackers, viruses and worms on your system invading your privacy.
And if you ever have a security problem with your PC, who would you call? You will pay a small fortune to get help from any of the cheap off-the-shelf security programs. Those products are not made to provide a total solution, rather just a piece of a good overall protection strategy.
Without professional grade, complete security like INVISUS - chances are good that you will become a victim of a cyber-attack. You may have already been hacked and you would never know it! Don't make the mistake of thinking popular retail security programs are enough.
How much is all the time and money you've put into your computer worth to you? How important or valuable is the information on your computer? Would you really trust your privacy and security to a $40 security product?
You say free?. You get what you pay for. When businesses and government agencies are spending millions on securing their computers, why would you ever think that a free security program would do an adequate job of protecting your computer? "Free" feels good to the wallet, until your privacy and security have been breached and your identity has been stolen. And free security programs are only limited versions or evaluation copies of the software. If you want real protection, you are going to have to pay for it.
Free security programs downloaded from the Internet do not provide you any support at all. They can't afford to help you. Instead, they will sell you their professional version and then offer you support. Would you be comfortable with "free" medical care from a doctor you've never met? Or "free" work done on your car by an unknown mechanic? Or would you trust free tax preparation services by someone you just met on the street? Of course not. So don't get lured into thinking that the free security programs you can find online are the best and most effective security programs you can find.

Here's some ideas to "roll ya own" Internet Security Suite for free. Free is always the best.
1. For your Anti-Virus......(Always use only 1 A-V)
I like the FREE, AOL ActiveVirusShield. Don't let the name AOL scare you. ActiveVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.
In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, ActiveVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.
Full test results are here:
http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82&mnu=82
ActiveVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources.
Updates many times per day to detect new malware.
Free to anyone, AOL member or not from:
http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp?
2. For your Firewall..........(Always use only 1 firewall)
An excellent free firewall is Comodo Personal Firewall. It can pass firewall "leak tests" that even most of the "paid-for" firewalls cannot pass.
And Comodo has a great support forum. Where the CEO / President of the company might even himself answer your question! Check it out at:
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
3. For your Anti-Adware and Anti-Spyware needs...............(use 2)
Pick and choose, 2 anti-spywares from the list below and alternate scanning with them on a regular basis. New spywares are created literally hourly, so no single anti-spyware can really detect all malware. Have at least 2 on hand and alternate scanning with each every few days or so. All are free. All can remove as well as detect.
Spybot Search and Destroy:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html
Ewido:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Adaware SE:

A-Squared:

SUPERAntiSpyware:

Windows Defender:

Unfortunately, many "paid for" anti-spyware products are in fact either of limited usefulness or downright scams. When in doubt, look at the list of rogue anti-spyware solutions listed here:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
4. And to protect your computer from ever getting infected with spyware in the first place............ (use them both)
SpywareBlaster:

SiteAdvisor:
http://www.siteadvisor.com/
Everything here is 100% free!!!!!!
Great luck!

Even tho I have answered this question before, here goes:
There are 2 ways to do this, temporary and permanent.
1. Temporary. Keep Windows and go to www.majorgeeks.com and download and run some of their free software such as AdAware and AVG. The viruses will come back, tho, as Windows is a virus magnet attracting 114,000 viruses.
2. Permanent. Dump Windows and get a free secure open source operating system such as www.kubuntu.org and say good bye to virii forever. Mac's, too, are virtually virus free.

go to www.download.com There is a search bar at the top. Type in :
AVG FREE anti-virus download it then update it.. Then look for SPY BOT Search and Destroy..download it and update it.. After you update Spy Bot , click on "Immunize" on the main Spy Bot page.. let it run ..A window may pop up telling you, so many things have been blocked and there are so many that can be blocked... if it does , then click immunize at the top. This loads the definitions. Click block pages silently also.. Look for and download , Zone Alarm free fire wall also..You need one of these too. Then go to www. lavasoft.com and look for AD-Aware SE personal edition..Download it and then update it... These programs are all free..Then run all three programs. The Firewall runs itself.. You will need to run all three programs at least once a week..The AVG protects constantly. And can be set up to automatically update, and scan for problems. But you will have to open and check for updates and run the programs manually for the other 2..

I use panda software. One year of coverage cost me 70.00.
They handle everything from spyware to viruses and since they do everything in house they are continually updating. They are located in Glendale, CA. You can sign up on line or reach them at 1-888-543-6901. Since using their program for the past couple of years I 've had no problems despite the thousands of spyware programs that have tried to corrupt my computer. Good Luck.

Hi Martina,
You should have Windows Defender. It is free from Microsoft and watches your system prevents programs from taking over your home page etc.
Go here to read about and get it - http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security...
Two other free programs you should get & run about once a week are Spybot and Adaware. They also are free and you can get them both here - http://www.download.com/
Between those three you are doing a pretty good job of protecting your system.
If you aren't running anto virus you should be. Download AVG anti Virus free here – http://www.get-antivirus.com/avg-antivirus
