I admit that Malkin and Stastny have have phenomenal seasons but Backstrom has had as sensational a season and he is never mentioned among one of the best rookies in the NHL. Backstrom stepped in about halfway through the season and has been absolutely solid down the stretch and will be the key to how far the Wild go in the playoffs. Backstrom leads the NHL in Save Percentage and Goals Against Average, two categories which are usually carried by veteran tenders. On a side note, does anyone know the last year a rookie led the NHL in either of these two categories?

Because he is 29 years old and to be considered for the calder a player cannot be older than 26. They have that rule in place so older guys coming from other countries cant be competing with kids that have little professional experience. International hockey is pretty good so it is a fair rule.

If Backstrom played the entire season as the Wild's starting goalie, and continued his stellar play then he'd be an ideal candidate for the Calder and possibly the Hart (MVP). But because of his absense in the first half of the season, when Fernandez claimed the starting position, he won't be considered for any trophy. Even WITH his stats, they came from the 2nd half of the season. And just because he's had a mad hot streak doesn't mean he should automatically be considered for the Calder!

This has been answered a few times already. He is TOO OLD. The Cutoff age for the Calder Trophy is like 25 or 26.

I can only assume it's because he played a half season, and Malkin's season was phenomenal.

But he definitely carried the Wild.

Probably because he came as the back up and no one thought he was going to play this good...and the people are probably retarded not to mention his name because he carried the whole team to the playoffs..along with the great play from the rest of the team..
