I've lied on my resume to get a job at a retail clothing store. I'm only a student right now and after so many unsuccessful attempts at finding a job, I took my friend's advice and lied. Now they've called me for an interview but I don't know if they'd be able to check where I've actually worked. My uncle told me that I could put him down as a reference and he would say that I worked for him over a course of a few months. It isn't a professional job or anything, it's just a part time job for me to earn extra money so I don't believe they'll be extremely hard at screening their potential employees. Is there any way for them to find out from my social insurance number or anything else? Thanks.

They usually call the old employer and ask how long you worked for them and job duties. In your case they may or may not call your uncle. There is no way they can check you social security number for anything. Dont worry about it. Good luck on your job interview.

Most of the time when you apply for a job, there is an application that goes along with it. On the application, they will ask for the previous experience and contact information. They can call the previous jobs and ask if you worked there. They may not do it...some firms are very thorough and others are not. You may or may not be ok.

Some employers have you write down where you worked and phone numbers so that they can call those places and check to see if you worked there and if the dates you wrote down match up with the dates they have. But other employers just have you write those things down, but have no intention of actually calling them up to see if what you wrote down is true.
