I am optimistically pessimistic about life and all its conundrums and pitfalls. But to be all fair, be prepared!

It is interesting that you asked the question the way you did. It is the exact way my mom expressed the same advice to me. Apparently, that is also the same advice of almost all parents from my country - Singapore.
After hearing it for so long and living by it for some years, I guess I could classify it as being secretly optimistic; but having an intrinsic belief that life is sometimes out to get you anyways. call it what you will, in my own words - I call it internally optimistic; externally pessimistic. How's that for contradicting.

Absolutely, if you never prepare for the worst, when it does happen you're totally in the dark and if you don't hope for the best you turn into a pessimistic son of a gun. I'm glad to say I'm an optimist.

I hope for the best, but prepare for the worst, because I am a little more pessimistic than most people I know.

Nope. Don't believe in it. I'm more optimistic. Being pessimistic is looking for an excuse to fail in my opinion. I'd rather look at a half a glass of water as being half full than half empty. If you look at the successful people that surround you you will see a majority of them have that same zest of life and spirit.

I think of the worst case scenario for almost every situation I'm in, and then I talk myself out of believing the worst will happen. So I'm a pessimist, but I don't like to be.

I like to think realistically. But I try to be more optimistic than pessimistic at times.

I hope for the best,
to start off being optimistic carries a positive desire,
instills tiny wishes into ones thoughts,
it keeps me with a sweet passion until the inevitable
slaps me hard and i find that the worse also has desires ~
