charlienoble is incorrect - Chiang Kai-shek was the leader of the Nationalists (KMT), not the Comintern (the COMmunist INTERNational), and yes - after the 'Xian Incident' there was an "agreement" on paper for the KMT and the Communists to form a "United Front" against the Japanese.

Chiang Kai Shek never ever joined forces with Mao Tse Tung, in fact the Komintern (General Chiang's forces) considered the Chinese communists to be the greater threat than the Japanese. And Chiang Kai Shek was correct, the communists eventually kicked Chiang out and took over China.
