PS> we live in the country and are prepared to raise them and keep them.

I have a lot of experience raising ducks both the big white ones and mallards...so, we are one up on this. As far as the ecoli...my daughter is a nurse and you can believe we all have to watch our hands...washing hands here is a ritual. P.S. my granddaughter is 9 years old...

Well I did last year. I live in the middle of town and I raised them for like a half of summer. Then my family and I set them free in my little, tiny lake. They would always come when you called and come back for food. Then they grew into their natual habbitat. So then when winter came and we were going to give them to out friends on a farm they wouldn't come back. So the lake frose over and we never saw them after that.

No, but i read that giving baby chicks (or ducks in your case) can lead to e-coli because of the way they are handled by children who tend to put hands in the mouth before washing them. Even if they look clean they can have traces of fecal matter on their feathers. Hopefully this isn't going to happen, but thought I would let you know. I hope she enjoys her pets and washes her hands;)

Actually, I went chasing after a "baby chick", but you wouldn't believe how hard those 18 - 21 year olds are to catch! Yea, right.
