I'm a Maryland resident, and I'm planning on pursuing my career in the medical field. I got accepted to both University of Maryland and Virginia Tech. They both offer good pre-med program. The question is which one is better than the other? Since i live in MD, the cost of University of Maryland will be lower than Virginia Tech, if i choose to attend University of Maryland. But should i really go to University of Maryland, and save myself some money, or should i go to Virgini Tech? Please give me some information about their campus and the quality of education offered by both schools. Will it really make a huge difference when I'm applying for Medical School? And which one of these two schools will prepare me the best for MCAT? Thanks a lot.

The only time that a student should choose a more expensive college is when that school is a better institution (more highly ranked, or more appropriate for a specific reason) than other choices.

In your case, you will be accruing significant debt in medical school, so undergraduate debt is additionally undesirable.

Virginia Tech is not a better school than the University of Maryland, so your choice should be clear.

Both are great schools. U of MD is a little better.

US News ranked U of MD as the 54th best university in the country. Virginia Tech comes in at 77.

First congratulations on your acceptances to both Universities. My experience has been that both are reputable and notorized institutions and either will serve you well. Ultimately, since U of M is going to save you significantly, I would lean that way. In the end, neither will serve as your terminal degree.

Best of sucess in all your endeavors.

you should judge based on where you feel more comfortable -- the two schools are about the same in reputation, so it won't be a decision based on that factor -- you can get into excellent med schools out of either program, i'm certain... so visit them and pick the one at which you feel most comfortable, because that's where you'll do the best work.
