When in the soviet union? It may not have had the longest ride but there were so so many things that happened. The soviet union was actually pretty prosperous under communism helping it rise to a modern power. you dont knwo what communism is? or marxism? or socialism? oh boy...communism is when the government handles all the means of production (the economy). its pretty much in charge of everything. Think of it as a mother taking care of her child. Socialism is when there is an integration of both communism and capitalism. Think of this as a teenager. He's feeding off his parents, but he also has a job so he isnt completely on his own.

You're asking too big a question for just a quick answer. The roots of Russian troubles are a thousand years old...absolute monarchy, feudal serfdom, corrupt aristocracy, continual threat of invasion...and no seaport that didn't freeze up for half the year. 19th century European utopian philosophers with wierd economic theories like Karl Marx inspired malcontents and reformers and eventually the Russian Revolution which overthrew the monarchy and established a Socialist government with a Communist economic system. Lenin and Stalin had a lot on their hands: freeing and educating the serfs, coping with rebellion and European fascism, dragging their backward society into the 20th century by force...not all of it worked and none of it was accomplished peacefully. The USSR ultimately could not sustain itself economically...with all the wealth of the country going to the military and the internal organs of suppression and espionage, the average Russian wasn't very much better off than the average Russian peasant in 1917.

Now, get thee to the library and look it all up for yourself. Mind wikipedia...that isn't always the real scoop.

There was tyranny especially during Stalin's rule. Communism and Marxism are almost synonyms Marxism is the communism in theory and communism is the Marxism in practice they both mean the government exclusive and total control of the destiny of the people who become like the ranch animals everything they need is taken care of. all they have to do is work for the government who is the sole owner of everything.

well basically..like the book..

there was a monarchy..a king and such..the rest of the people lived as pessants/farmers...much like they did in the 18th century..

crops went bad..people starved...thoughts of the french revolution was heavy in people minds..

people like karl marks proposed the ideas that all men are created equal..there should be no kings..everyone should get a fair share

so people like lenin/stalin/trotsky gathered their troops and had a revolution which over threw the kings army

the problem..like in the book..was that noone was equal...those in power..seized power...and dolled out wealth/positions to those loyal to the party..
those that got in the way or disagreed were killed..

I believe it was more inertial from failed economics. The planned economy really didn't workout too well.
