The ball pens and Gel pens are more portable than the fountain pen, and less likely to stain. Gel pens write very smoothly, but the ink doesn't last as long as a ball point pen. You can get them in various colours even metalic colours It is difficult to get a good ball point pen. Papermate used to do a refil which was very reliable, lasted a long time, could be used at any angle, due to a mechanical pump when you wrote, but the one they replaced it with, doesn't last very long at all. Bic crystall pens have been good, I have known them work until the last drop of ink, they are much cheaper than Paper Mate and Parker, and good value, but they are not always as good as to work until the last drop of ink. Parker is perhaps the best quality ball pen. But with fountain pens you get a different quality of writing, I bought some cheap ones, , but one leaked all over the place. Try the others, but still use the fountain pen for special letters.
